Northview High School's Digital Design classes participated in a 19th Annual Century Sawmill Pageant poster contest sponsored by the Century Lions Club. Alissa Fiellin placed first in the contest to create the best poster to promote the pageant. Alex McDonald placed second in the poster contest, and Erin Fremin placed third. Fiellin received a $25 prize for her efforts.  

Three artistic youngsters at Byrneville Elementary School have been named winners in the Century Sawmill Pageant Poster Contest sponsored by the Century Lions Club. The time is approaching to assess how is Larry Howe-Kerr doing as district manager of the Pueblo West Metropolitan District. Feb. 4 will mark Howe-Kerr's six-month anniversary on the job and — to put it bluntly — will make it cheaper for the board to fire him. Howe-Kerr was hired in August to replace former District Manager Don Saling, a popular figure who was fired in March.

Mary Ann, Ebensburg, died Nov. 30, 2009, at St. Peter's Hospice, Albany, N.Y. Survived by daughters, Carole Ann Ling (Jay), Indiana; and Donna Stephens (Dan), Bangor, Maine; sisters and brother, Margaret Lunger, Ebensburg; and Pearl Natarian and Bill Hendrick, both of Northern Cambria; seven grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Duke, a German shepherd police dog that was being turned over to the care of his handler, Pueblo County Sheriff Deputy Brandon Talton. The dog was trained to detect narcotics as well as subdue a suspect, according to Undersheriff JR Hall. Age and hip problems forced his retirement this week. The alert dog stayed on his best behavior as commissioners petted and posed with him and Talton for photographs in the commissioners chambers.  

The Pueblo West Metropolitan District is switching to a stronger bank. The issue was started last year by former board member Bill Vickers, who since has been recalled from the board. Vickers read that the district's main bank, Southern Colorado National Bank, was given a very poor rating by federal regulators and seemed to be in financial trouble.

John Van Auken was named president of the new board of directors of the Pueblo West Metropolitan District Tuesday. The meeting was the first since the swearing in of three new board members who replaced recalled board members Steve Abel, Bill Vickers and Jeff Sloan. Van Auken was not targeted in the recall election, which was sparked after a majority of the old board fired former District Manager Don Saling in March.  

The Pueblo West Metropolitan District's board of directors is scheduled to accept a proposal for banking services at Tuesday night's meeting. The district decided earlier to stop doing business with Southern Colorado National Bank, saying the bank had received an unfavorable ranking by federal regulators. The board's meeting will be the first since former board members Bill Vickers, Jeff Sloan and Steve Abel were recalled Aug. 18 and replaced by Chuck Green, Mike French and Jerry Martin.

Chuck Green, Mike French and Jerry Martin, the men elected last week to replace them, watched from the standing-room-only audience section. The three board members were recalled last Tuesday after voting in March to fire former District Manager Don Saling.
